A Coach Profile: Dave Duncan

The player-turned-coach Dave Duncan was born on September 26 of 1945 in Dallas, Texas. On his retirement from the game he joined as a pitching coach. As a catcher he had the opportunity to play 11 seasons starting with the Oakland Athletics, which he was with for seven seasons and ending his career with the Cleveland Indians as well as Baltimore Orioles.

Known as a defensive catcher during his career days, Duncan has to his credit a career average batting of 214. He is remembered for his tied Major League record of four consecutive doubles in one game, which he achieved on March 13, 1975. He could hit only three doubles in the rest of the 95 games he played in 1975.

Duncan started his career as a famous coach in the year 1978 with the Cleveland Indians, the team for which he played during his later years as a player. Soon he shifted his platform as the pitching coach for the famous Seattle Mariners and later joined in the Chicago White Sox, where his former teammate and friend La Russa was the manager of the team.

One of the important aspects of his coaching career is his rare feat of being the only active pitching coach without being a pitcher himself in his long career as a baseball player. Still his staff won many laurels in pitching. The three Cy Young awards won by his staff on October 23, 1995 is a testimony to his illustrious coaching career. La Russa, Duncans team mate and friend, who worked as Manager in many of the teams in which they teamed as coach and manager, had no reservations whatsoever in publicly acknowledging the contributions of Duncan in the success of various teams he managed for the past quarter a century.

Duncan lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife Jeannie and two sons. The eldest son Shelly was drafted in the 2001 draft, in the second round, as an outfielder by the New York Yankees and another son Chris was picked up by the Cardinals. Chris made his debut in September 2005, a moment his father and great coach will always cherish.

Baltimore Orioles Handicapping: 2006 Season Preview

The Orioles had a great start to the 2005 Baseball season. At the 40 game mark, they were 26-14 +10 units. Even I thought they could contend with the Yankees and Red Sox for the division. The Yankees were playing bad and the Red Sox looked poised for a letdown. Too bad. But how did their strong start resonate with bettors the rest of the season?

Most people continued betting on them. In fact, they ended the season 48-74 -31 units. Since the initial impression that the Orioles gave to bettors was a good one, they kept betting on them. This was why the odds were never adjusted accordingly.

This is why recent run scoring averages and won-loss records are so vital to baseball betting systems. Teams can go into a funk and you want to start betting against them once you see it but before Vegas odds.

During the past 122 games of the season, the Orioles were overvalued by about 34 points as a favorite. Against American League opponents, they were a dismal 11-18 as a home favorite, -14 units in 29 games. Our lesson from this is to avoid betting on teams in a slump.

It is tough to judge the Baltimore Orioles in the 2006 baseball season. There were no glaring signs of success, only early season success and late season failure for this team. We will just have to see how the 2006 season plays out.

Top 5 Young Hurlers

Flix Hernndez, Seattle He was hailed as the next Dwight Gooden when he was called up by the Mariners in August 2005, and he pitched well enough to validate that claim. In 12 starts, Hernndez posted a 2.67 ERA, a WHIP of 1.00, 77 strikeouts, and an incredible batting average against of .203. He has struggled at times this season, especially on the road. His bloated ERA of 5.32 can be attributed to control problems he has encountered at times. However, he out-dueled fellow stud Francisco Liriano (see profile below) on June 6, pitching seven innings and yielding just one run off six hits for the win. Hernndez performance seems to have put him back on track. Regardless of his up-and-down 2006 season, the Venezuelan is without question baseballs best pitching prospect at only 20 years old.

Josh Johnson, Florida When the Marlins conducted a fire-sale this past off-season, trading Josh Beckett and losing AJ Burnett to free agency, they were widely criticized for breaking up their staff of young hurlers. The Marlins, however, knew of the talent that their minor league system possessed. Johnson, a 22-year-old righty, was one of those minor leaguers whom the Marlins believed would contribute during the 2006 season. He has not disappointed, posting some truly remarkable numbers: a 2.11 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and .192 BAA. Johnson earned 3 wins in May, an impressive total for a pitcher on such a poor team. In that month, he had a 1.96 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. In his last start on June 6, he allowed five hits and zero earned runs over seven innings in a loss to San Francisco. If the Marlins are to improve in the coming years, Johnson will be leading them.

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Coming into this season, Liriano was the jewel of the Twins minor league system. The only question was whether he would earn a spot in the starting rotation. He missed a significant part of spring training by competing on the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic. He ended up starting the season in the bullpen, where he had a 3.22 ERA and 13 K/9. An injury to Kyle Lohse gave Liriano his chance. He did not disappoint, allowing only 2 hits and one run over five innings in his first start. In four total starts, he is 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. There is now no question that Liriano is permanently supplanted in the rotation.

Jonathan Papelbon, Boston After Keith Foulke suffered from a nuclear implosion last season, the Red Sox closer position was in a state of flux. Papelbon, a 2003 fourth-round draft pick, was given the job to start this season. He has been arguably the best closer in the baseball, converting 20 consecutive save opportunities before blowing a save on June 9. Combining that with his 0.30 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, and .144 BAA, Papelbon would look to be a Cy Young Award contender this season if he continues his dominance.

Justin Verlander, Detroit The Detroit Tigers have experienced a renaissance this season, sitting atop the AL Central with a 38-23 record. The outstanding performance of the starting rotation has been the key to the resurgence. Verlander, a former number 2 overall pick, has been extraordinary as a rookie. With a 7-4 record and 3.35 ERA, he has simply been unhittable at times. In the month of May, the rookie went 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA. He pitched a 5-hit complete game shutout on May 22 against Kansas City. Verlander will only improve with experience, and will be a Cy Young-caliber pitcher in the coming years.

Tigers Acquire Gary Sheffield With A Roar

The Tigers just acquired Gary Sheffield. This did not come cheap as they acquired the outfielder from the Yankees for pitching prospects Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett. They then went on to sign a two year $28 million contract extension with Gary Sheffield which is till 2009.

With this move, Sheffield is reunited with the general manager and field manager who put 1997 World Series champion team, Marlins, together. Sheffield express his delight saying that he is ecstatic to get reunited with the people he has always loved and talked about in the last 10 years.

With Sheffields induction into the Tigers, their batting lineup is suddenly looking good. Sheffield will strengthen Tigers middle batting order and Tiger President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski has been meaning to do this for sometime.

Sheffield, who is a right handed hitting slugger, played only 39 games this season due to a wrist injury. While he was injured, the New York Yankees brought in Bobby Abreu as his fill in who became his replacement instead. After his return from injury, Sheffield returned to first base with mixed results. The Yankees offered him up for trade once they exercised his $13 million option for next year.

The Tigers did not want to use Sheffield as a rented player. They reached an agreement on the trade with the Yankees after which Dombrowski spoke with Sheffield to ensure that he was comfortable with the move and contract extension. The Tigers will not be using Sheffield on first base. He will be the designated hitter to fill the role of Dmitri Young.

2006 New York Yankees Preview

2005 Overview:

The New York Yankees simply werent themselves for much of the 2005 season. The Bombers starting pitching proved spotty for much of the year while their offense regularly scratched and clawed for runs during the entire first half of the season. Newly acquired starter Randy Johnson struggled to become the power pitcher the Yankees had hoped for, while the rest of the pitching staff battled with constant injuries and poor starts. Somehow Manager Joe Torre was able to keep his team in the mix of things until after the All Star break. And as the Orioles and Blue Jays began slumping in the second half of the season, the Yankees hit their stride.

Rookie 2nd baseman Robinson Cano (.297 14 62) provided the Yankees with an impressive bat and steady defense while 3rd baseman Alex Rodriquez (.321 48 130) assembled a stellar MVP campaign hitting behind Shortstop and Captain Derek Jeter (.309 19 70). Outfielders Hideki Matsui (.305 23 116) and Gary Sheffield (.291 34 123) also helped anchor the Yankee offense while 1st basemen Jason Giambi (.271 32 87 108 walks) rebounded from his admission of steroid use and a dreadful 2004 campaign. Giambi turned in an impressive offensive second half and forced fan favorite Tino Martinez (.241 17 49) to the bench despite Tinos hot offensive production prior to the all star break.

Closer Mariano Riveria (7-4 1.38) proved once again why he is one of the most valuable closers in baseball appearing in 71 games while saving 43. And Randy Johnson (17-8 3.79 211K) finally settled in to provide some needed consistency in the rotation. The Yankees also caught some much needed lightening in a bottle from newcomers Aaron Small (10-0 3.20) and Chien-Ming Wang (8-5 4.02) while starting pitcher Mike Mussina was able to string together a number of quality starts in order to improve his overall record to 13-8. The July addition of Shawn Chacon (7-3 2.85) acquired from the Colorado Rookies for RHP Ramon Ramirez and Eduardo Sierra also provided some much needed help for the starting rotation.

The Yanks ended their season in a classic fight to the finish battling rival Boston for first place finally clinching the AL Eastern division in the final weekend series against the Red Sox.

The Yankees postseason didnt prove quite as exciting as they lost to the Angels in 5 games exiting quickly in the first round of the playoffs.

Off Season Moves:

After a disappointing postseason, Steinbrenner and company quickly re-signed GM Brian Cashman and began focusing on the tasks at hand. First in line was extending leftfielder Hideki Matsuis contract for another four years. Next, Yankee management added bullpen strength by signing free agents Kyle Farnsworth (1-1 2.19 16 saves) and Mike Myers (3-1 3.13) while trading for pitcher Ron Villone (5-5 4.08).

Yankee fans were also given a special Christmas present on December 21st when Boston free agent outfielder Johnny Damon (.316 10 75) agreed to terms as the Yankees new centerfielder. Free agents Octavio Dotel and Miguel Cairo were also signed while fan favorite Bernie Williams (.249 12 64) agreed to return - at least for one more season - as the teams DH.

2006 Analysis:

The Yankees addressed some key bullpen concerns with additions of Farnsworth and Myers who will join Tanyon Sturtze (5-3 4.73), Aaron Small and Chien-Ming Wang as the bridge to Riveria. Dotel is coming off surgery but his save numbers (36 in 2004) have the Yankees hoping he is worth a chance. Damon finally gives the Yankees the leadoff hitter they have lacked for the past few seasons and will solve the defensive problems that eventually forced the benching of centerfield Bernie Williams prior to the all star break.

If both are healthy, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina should have an easier first half then last season but the 4th and 5th starters for the Yankees may need some help - so expect Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano to receive some competition. It will be interesting to see just how Joe Torre fits Chacon, Wang and Small into the mix.

An Introduction to Baseball Bats

Whether you enjoy the crack of wood or the ping of aluminum, baseball bats are designed for players ranging from Little Leaguers to professionals. Baseball bats are crafted out of specialized woods, composites or alloys, and aluminum, depending on the league. Bats can be forged out of various woods, ash and maple being the most popular.

Baseball bats are available in different barrel sizes and lengths. Little League, Senior League, and college level baseball bats vary and have to be within certain measurement parameters, depending on the league. Since the introduction of aluminum bats, a controversy has raged over whether metal or wood is superior; the current view seems to be that metal bats outperform wooden bats. Some research reveals that aluminum bats smack the ball faster because they are hollow, therefore lighter to swing.

Softball, Little League, Senior League, and college baseball bats are primarily aluminum, but as the level advances to professional, wood bats are mandatory. Many believe that aluminum and composite bats pose a danger to advanced players due to the fierceness of the rebound off the bat, which gives players (especially pitchers) less reaction time.

Many players prefer the classic feel of a wood bat. They assert that wood bats are equal to their metallic counterparts, if not better. Others prefer the quickness of an aluminum bat. Regardless of a bats composition, all bats have a sweet spot. This special spot is located on the upper-mid section of a bat and punches the ball with the most power. Many players select a bat based solely on the size of the sweet spot.

To find the right bat, consider which league it is designed for; the length, weight, and circumference of the barrel; and your price range. Remember that wood bats usually weigh more because they are solid and designed to withstand snapping. Aluminum bats are hollow, do not break, and are quicker than wood bats.

Baseball Party Games - Pleasing the Crowd

If your son or daughter is a mad-keen fan, it can be great fun to plan their next birthday party around the theme of baseball. Here are a few ideas:

\”Baseball Pinata\” Baseball Party Game

When it comes to baseball party games, its hard to go past a good old piata. A week or so prior to the party, prepare the piata by covering a large balloon with glue-soaked newspaper strips layer by layer, leaving a small hole near the neck of the balloon. To keep the inner layers from staying wet, let the piata dry out every 5 layers. Try and make the shape as close to a circle as possible. Fill the piata with candy through the hole, cover the hole and paint the dried piata to resemble a baseball. Guests take turns to put on a blindfold (which can be left off for younger players) and try to break open the piata with the baseball bat. This baseball party game ends when everyone gets showered with candy.

\”Pitcher, Pitcher, Batter\” Baseball Party Game

When youre working with a theme like baseball, party games can easily be adapted to suit. This baseball party game, a variant of Duck, Duck, Goose, is one example. All the children except the birthday boy/girl sit in a circle. The birthday boy/girl walks around the outside of the circle, tapping each person on the head and saying batter. When they say pitcher instead of batter, the child who was just tapped must jump up, chasing the other child around the circle. The birthday boy/girl has to run all the way around the circle to the empty spot without being tagged; if they make it back, they stay in spot and the person they tapped becomes the tapper. If they get tagged, they must sit in the centre of the circle for the remainder of this baseball party game.

Baseball College Recruiting: 10 Facts Baseball Players, Coaches, and Parents Need to Know

Although many of the colleges want you to believe you have to be the top of the top for baseball college recruiting, that isnt always so. In fact, many times colleges are assuming that they are not looking at the top 5% because those student athletes may already be spoken for.

Some things to remember:

1. Grades count. Sure, athletic ability is important, but do you have the grades to get into the college admissions office and catch their eye even without your sports ability? You should have grades that support you as a well-rounded student, not just an image of a ball player alone.

2. Do you know what a college coach values in a player? Is it the same as a high school coach or a teen-level coach? What do you bring to the coach that is different from the myriad of other players your age and ability that makes you a step above? Can you bring the values to the team that your coach is looking for?

3. What is your motivation? Not just are you motivated but what motivates you? Is it fame, money or a passion for the game? Do you work at your game based upon only your motivation? Do you have many motivators for your game? This is important; because parents, students and coaches will need to understand the motivators.

4. Are you motivated? As a verb, do you have it? Do you have what it takes to look into adversity and tough times and still shine? This is going to be important to be able to display to prospective colleges and future coaches as this may be a tie breaker trait.

5. Dont wait until the last minute. Some students start as early as their freshman year in marketing themselves to colleges. If you are a senior and havent started, dont let that discourage you, but do get moving on that! Market yourself as early as you can as a true athlete, because every moment you are no exposing your abilities, your peers are.

6. Do you, or do you plan to, meet the core requirements of entering college? If you are a great player, its important to have pretty good grades and decent SAT scores. There are a myriad of Internet sites that can help you make sure you are not lagging, and your guidance office should be able to help you. Again, its never too early to start working on your sports collegiate career.

7. Know the reality. According to statistics, less than 15% of high school baseball players will play college baseball. Just know your realities so if you dont make the team, you are not devastated. Its as important to know the realities of the situations as well as how to best get into a situation. Never enter any situation blind to both sides.

8. Look at the bigger picture. You may want to play ball but you may also want to have a certain climate, social life and academic schedule that fits your desires. Look at more than just the team; because you are more than just a ball player.

9. Do you have what it takes? Its more than just the above. There is also something called Luck and Timing. Absolutely realize that you have to have both in addition to all the things you can control. Realize that a little of this is going to be out of your control.

10. Finances: not everyone is going to be playing ball on scholarship, or at least on full scholarship. Decide if the cost is worth the sport participation. If you are reading this, the answer probably is yes, of course it is but realize an injury or a sudden lack of passion means you still have the finances to deal with but none of the glory of the sport. Really weigh your financial realities.

All of this is meant to get you thinking be it a parent or a player. Even a coach reading this needs to understand that you are going to be looking at some kids who have the research down pat and can impress you, but some other youth will be just as impressive deep down, but you may have to scratch the surface a bit. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of impressing a coach and a college but may be an exceptional player, student and person under it all. Its everyones responsibility to learn as much as possible and do what they can to ensure the best options for all involved.

Major League Baseball Rookies - Top 10 Baseball Rookies from 2005

10. Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners)

While Felix Hernandez has only made 4 starts in the Major Leagues this year, he has done enough in those 4 starts to have him recognized as one of the top rookies in the major leagues. He currently has an ERA of 1.24, and has been dominating opponents with the ease of a savvy veteran. Felix Hernandez is only 19 years old, and is probably the best prospect pitcher to come along since Mark Prior. While its still very early in Felixs career, he looks to have a very bright future as a dominant #1 starter ahead of him.

9. Joey Gathright (Tampa Bay Devil Rays)-

Joey Gathright is one of the fastest players in Major League Baseball. Since he only has 100 at-bats to his name, he cannot be ranked higher, but he has shown the promise to be an excellent starting center fielder in the major leagues. He is hitting .286, and he already has stolen 10 bases. Expect Gathright to challenge for the stolen base title for the next several years.

8. Robinson Cano (New York Yankees)-

Robinson Cano has done an excellent job filling in at 2nd base for the Yankees this year. He has hit .277, but he also played very well defensively at 2nd base. Playing for the New York Yankees is also a tough proposition for any player, let alone a rookie. With the Yankees struggling to get into the playoffs the team has been under more scrutiny than ever, and Cano has handled it with as much class as one could expect.

7. Zach Duke (Pittsburgh Pirates)-

Zach Duke has shown that he has an incredibly nasty overhand curve, to go along with a 90 miles per hour heater. At this point he has an ERA of 1.87, while going 6-0 to start off his major league career. Duke threw a lot of innings in the minors this year as well, so the Pirates might try to shut him down so that he doesnt wear himself out. Duke has shown that he is the real deal, and could be a force in the Pirates staff for years to come.

6. Tadahito Iguchi (Chicago White Sox)-

Tadahito has hit .280 for the White Sox this year, but his value has been moving runners over in the 2nd hole for the White Sox. One of the big reasons the White Sox have succeeded this year has been because the team has played solid fundamental baseball. A large part of their team has been Tadahito, who has constantly sacrificed his own at bats for the good of the team. While Tadahitos stats may not jump out at you, he has joined Major League Baseball and has played an integral part for a playoff caliber ballclub.

5. Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim)-

Ervin Santana has gone 7-5 with a 4.41 ERA for the Angels this year. As the year has progressed, Ervin has become a better and better pitcher. With the Angels fighting for a playoff spot, Ervin has become a key cog in the Angels rotation. Santana has not given up more than 3 runs in his past 7 outings, and with that kind of production, you can expect Santana to be in the Angels rotation for years to come.

4. Joe Blanton (Oakland Athletics)-

Blanton has done an excellent job in his 1st full season in the major leagues. Blanton was very highly touted in the minor leagues, and has come in and gotten the job done for the Athletics this year. Blanton has a 3.75 ERA this year, but has shown flashes of brilliance, and looks to become the #1 starter that the Athletics have been looking for.

3. Willy Taveras (Houston Astros)-

Willy Taveras has had an amazing rookie season for the Astros. He is currently batting .301 with 31 stolen bases. He has also played an excellent CF, and has been a jump-starter for the Astros lineup all season long. When he gets on base, it is very difficult to stop him from stealing 2nd. With Taveras in centerfield the Astros have found their leadoff hitter for the present and future.

2. Gustavo Chacin (Toronto Blue Jays)-

Gustavo has had an excellent season this year for the hapless Blue Jays. His ERA at 3.40, ranks 9th in the American League. Lefties are currently only hitting .198 against him, while hes managed to go 11-6 for a losing Blue Jays team. Chacin has proven that he could become a frontline starter in the Major Leagues in the very near future.

1. Huston Street (Oakland Athletics)-

Huston Street has been absolutely phenomenal for the Oakland Athletics this year. When Octavio Dotel went down for the Athletics there was a large hole in the closers role. Mr. Street came in and not only performed well, but has helped propel the Athletics towards the playoffs. Street has a 1.31 ERA, 16 Saves, and a WHIP at .92. Street should win the Rookie of the Year in the American League this year, and with the kind of arm that he possesses, he could be a dominant closer for many years to come.

Honorable Mentions Nick Swisher, Andrew Sisco, Bobby Jenks, Scott Kazmir, Chien-Ming Wang, Matt Murton, Lance Niekro, Garrett Atkins, Jeff Francoeur, Chris Duffy, Prince Fielder, Delmon Young
