Postpartum Depression
If you live in the United States, chances are that you have heard the heated debate between Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer over Brook Shields' admission that she used prescribed medication to help alleviate her symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) after she had her child. Postpartum depression (also known as postnatal depression) is a form of depression that can affect women after they give birth to a child. This condition is not to be confused with the more commonly known, "Baby" or maternity blues. "Baby blues" are a mild moodiness that most women suffer after they give birth. In some cases, even fathers may suffer from baby blues and/or postpartum depression. Symptoms of baby blues usually only last from a few hours to a few days and include: sleeplessness, irritability, inability to concentrate and headaches.
Symptoms Of PPD
According to Wikipedia, symptoms of PPD can occur anytime during the first year of having a baby and include, but are certainly not limited to the following:
- Sadness
- Hopelessness
- Guilt
- Sleeplessness
- Trouble eating
- Inability to be comforted
- Exhaustion
- Inability to enjoy things you once enjoyed
- Social withdrawal
- Feeling inadequate taking care of your child
What Causes PPD?
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, PPD may be caused due to fast hormonal changes in a woman's body after pregnancy. For instance, during pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone levels are extremely elevated. Within the first 24 hours after childbirth, however, these hormone levels rapidly drop down to normal, non pregnant levels which makes researchers think that these changes may be indicative of by depression occurs.
Treatment & Advice for PPD
Postpartum depression left untreated can be dangerous for a mother and her newborn child. The mother may develop thoughts of hurting her child or herself due to her mental instability. The best methods of treatment for PPD is to talk about it to a psychologist. In some cases, medication may even be necessary until the symptoms subside. Other helpful tips for dealing with PPD include:
- Sleep when the baby sleeps.
- Ask for help with household chores so that you don't feel overwhelmed.
- Talk to you husband, partner of family and friends about how you are feeling.
- Don't spend too much time along. Get out and exercise. Don't feel that just because you have a newborn child that you are confined to the house.
- Join a support group.
