Should You Stop Working Just Because You Are Pregnant?
Back in the old days, it was rare to see a pregnant woman out in the working world, as women were thought to be especially fragile during pregnancy. We now know that while there are precautions that need to be taken during pregnancy, you aren't going to suddenly go into labor from sitting at a desk all day, or are highly unlikely to. If you need or wish to work during your pregnancy, there is no reason you can't unless your doctor advises you not to. There are some occupations that don't mix well with pregnancy, but if you have a job that isn't very labor intensive or stressful, there usually isn't a problem. Some women work until the day they go into labor, and if your doctor is okay with it, there is no reason not to, if you wish to do so.
The choice of working or not working is really up to each individual person, unless there is a medical problem or concern that comes into play. You know your own financial situation, and if you don't feel that you can afford not to work during your pregnancy, and you are healthy, then by all means, carry on. Some employers only give a certain amount of time for a woman to go on maternity leave, and if you use that up, then you have no guarantee that your job will be held for you, in the event you need to stay out longer. For example, if you get 12 weeks of maternity leave, and you decide to stop working three weeks before your due date, you are missing out on time that you could be spending with your baby after it is born. If you have a difficult delivery, or a C-section, you may need those extra three weeks to recover. If you are too tired to work any longer, or just want some time at home to prepare before delivery, then that is okay to. It is your choice to make.
Make certain that if you do continue working, you take the necessary precautions to protect both yourself and the health of your baby. Keep all of your prenatal appointments, get plenty of rest, take your vitamins, exercise if you are allowed to do so and if you have a day that you feel like you need to stay home and rest, don't hesitate to do so.
If you need to go to bed earlier or sleep a little later, arrange it. Make sure that you drink plenty of water, even while you are at work, and don't get so busy that you skip meals, or forget to make healthy food choices. Take breaks as you need them, and listen to the cues that your body gives you. If nothing else, you may have to work a reduced schedule, particularly towards the end of your pregnancy, when carrying the extra weight starts to take a toll on your body and your energy levels.
Don't be afraid to accept help as it is offered. People who have had children before understand how difficult it can be, to try to juggle pregnancy, work, and maintain a household as well. There is no reason you can't work during your pregnancy, again barring any medical problems, as long as you take care of yourself and your baby at the same time.
