What birth is like?

Birth can be experienced in very different ways. How would you like your birth to be? The majority of American women (95%) choose to give birth in the hospital today. Why?

A deep question, connected with the social being of our state. Everyone should know by now that the hospitals are a huge money-making industry. And that is what it comes down to. The paying customer.

There is no such care 1 and 1 - 'provider' and mother, nobody will care about your emotional status. Nobody will know who you are. you go in the hospital and you surrender yourself to a bunch of people who you don't know and to whom you are a stranger as well - just another client. They treat you like a non-being. Like a high-emergency patient. Like a unworthy participant in the whole story.

Can your partner be with you all the time? -Maybe not. Can you walk around when you in labour to facilitate the birth.- I don't think so. And when you get hungry, what about eating and drinking? - Forget about it. But what do you get?

A pubic shave and an enema for welcome. Strapped on a table, legs apart, unable to move. Masked physicians, unknown strangers handling roughly your private parts. Dressed in a patient-gown, hooked up to various monitors and equipment. Directed by doctors and nurses commands when to push the baby out. Drugs that will speed your labour - why does it take so long, there are other clients waiting and the space is needed anyway. And - better be in time for supper. Simultaneously offered some pain-relievers - which hold up the labour. And the result is impatience and... - we tried everything, so we cannot get sued. It must be a emergency cesarean.

The child comes in the world - full of drugs, with forceps pulled out. In an "sterile" environment, delivered by a stranger into bright light, so much noise, instruments clinging, monitors beeping, voices speaking. Cold. Violent cutting. Examination. Away from the womb which is all that he knows.

No loving arms. No warm and soothing breastmilk. But together with other newborns in a box. But alone. Abandoned. Not knowing that loving arms are near. A wealth of information and research shows that the medicalization of birth has been detrimental on many levels for mother, baby and family.
